Zuiderzicht
In addition to the view, the construction of Zuiderzicht is also impressive. The assembly of the concrete exoskeleton was done element by element. A huge feat, as the elements weighed an average of 3.5 tons and the allowed margin of error was only 2 centimeters.
At 80 metres, Zuiderzicht is as tall as the other towers on Nieuw Zuid, but less tall than the Boerentoren. When completed in the 1930s, this was the first skyscraper on the European mainland and out of respect for its heritage value, no building taller than this is allowed in Antwerp. That doesn't make the views from the tower any less spectacular: on clear days, you can see the Basilica of Koekelberg from here, which is some 50 kilometres south. The tower is also registered with Deurne Airport and contains the necessary signage for arriving and departing aircraft.
Did you know that the shell of Zuiderzicht was in place very quickly? By working with a climbing formwork, it was possible to construct 1 floor per week.
The concept of Zuiderzicht is very versatile and interprets the qualities of the typical Belgian detached house. On the roof of the hotel, residents can enjoy a unique, architectural urban garden, designed by Avantgarden. The dwellings in this building are organised in a compact and efficient way and surrounded by a flexible exostructure, which the residents can fill in themselves as a balcony, conservatory, small storage room or green element.
All buildings in Nieuw Zuid are designed by award-winning architects, who have come to the fore with innovative and visually powerful designs.
