Het masterplan van Nieuw Zuid
The master plan of Nieuw Zuid, with more than 2,000 residential units, is the largest urban expansion in the country and it was drafted by Paola Viganò of the Italian Studio Secchi-Viganò. The Milan-based firm won the design competition launched by Triple Living and the City of Antwerp for the immense building project.
The master plan divides Nieuw Zuid into seven areas. Districts in the city neighbourhood so to speak. An area is an entity consisting of a quiet residential street and two residential blocks each with a common green interior space. The areas are positioned pretty much perpendicular to the Scheldt to give as many people as possible a nice view and are connected by one central main street. This implantation gives the district a certain width or body, a multi-layeredness in contrast to the single storey buildings we see on the Belgian coast, for example.
Did you know that at Nieuw Zuid, the landscape was drawn out first and only then the buildings were placed?
The intent was: each apartment should have at least one panorama. A view of the Scheldt, the park or both. After all, according to Viganò, a view has an important function: "It gives a sense of space and that is good for your wellbeing".
Secchi-Viganò's master plan also stood out from the other proposals because it was the only one to include a 6-hectare park. Together with Bas Smets, who designed the landscape, Viganò brought the natural environment into its own and reinvented it.
All buildings in Nieuw Zuid are designed by award-winning architects, who have come to the fore with innovative and visually powerful designs.
