Tim Van Laere Gallery

Largest Gallery in the country

Tim Van Laere is a well-known name in the world of Antwerp contemporary art. In 2019, he traded in his renowned gallery on Verlatstraat for an eye-catching building in the centre of Nieuw Zuid.

Ambiguous pavillion

Harmoious and timeless

Tim Van Laere's art gallery is planned as an autonomous and somewhat ambiguous pavilion in the neighbourhood. In this way, it is truly a landmark and an anchor point in the streetscape. An attractive urban building along the central promenade, inviting people to come in. The building makes a statement both to its immediate surroundings and its interior; art is central and immediately visible and accessible to everyone in the city.

With a facade 50 metres long, this imposing building is the largest art gallery in Belgium. Inside, there are several halls with as much as 1,000m² of exhibition space.

"It's a building tailored to the art and the artists. They remain the single most important driving force for me."

The architect's vision

The gallery was designed by OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen. "An inspiring dialogue with Tim sharpened our vision for art staging and exhibition spaces," the architects said. "With the new gallery on Nieuw Zuid, the Tim Van Laere Gallery shows character. The new neighbourhood, a vibrant part of town, needs a difficult, contrarian centre: a soul. Our building is simple, and rather ‘in your face’. Tim's engaging programming needs a solid background. A set of five rooms create spaces for art. The set of spaces make a silhouette at the square."
