Dynamic design for a dynamic neighbourhood
Bas Smets used his international experience to create the perfect landscape at Nieuw Zuid. With his vast artistic and scientific background, he managed to bring a wasteland to life. Its varied landscape design grows with the story of the dynamic site every day.
Wadis promote water management
The trees in the park are planted in undulating rows that follow the former train tracks on the site. The tree waves flow, as it were, through the neighbourhood to the Scheldt River, which was also an important source of inspiration for the project.
In order to manage the site's water resources on site, wadis, or sunken green areas have been planted in. Through linear wadis, or open ditches between the buildings, the water runs to the large wadis in the park. On nice days they form ideal sunbathing areas with their slightly sloping bottoms. In case of heavy rain, they are allowed to fill up without any problem, thus preventing other parts of the site from being flooded."
Did you know that the tower in the park is the chimney of the heating plant that heats the entire neighbourhood? It is 55 meters high.
“We decided to have the landscape designed first and only then the buildings. This ensures that the neighbourhood has an image and unity. Working in this way gives the environment the independence it deserves.”
The architect's vision
Bas Smets has thought long and hard about the identity of the landscape in this new part of town. "Each area has its history," he clarifies. "Because of the former forest structure on the Nieuw Zuid site, we chose to focus on 'living in the park.' Our approach to public space begins with a vision of the undeveloped space as part of the larger park structure. We didn't want to make a park along the urban development, but an urban development in the park."
