Nieuw Zuid
Nieuw Zuid
Nieuw Zuid is a new part of the city next to Zuid in Antwerp, made for living. A cosy neighbourhood, where people live, work, play and socialise. An architecturally diverse palette of buildings designed by the best in their profession. A green neighbourhood too, where people enjoy the extensive park and the views on the Scheldt.
Here, the city generates oxygen, rainwater is used smartly and energy is used sparingly. Welcome to tomorrow's neighbourhood.
City living and greenery, Nieuw Zuid proves that they get along very well. More than that, its green character gives the neighbourhood a relaxed atmosphere and an extraordinary quality of life unique to an urban landscape.
Sixty percent of the land is reserved for plantings, wadis, an expansive park, play areas and courtyard gardens. In addition, Nieuw Zuid is also bordered by Kaaipark with urban woods on the Scheldt, and Zuidpark, the new park on the Gedempte Zuiderdokken.
All of the buildings at Nieuw Zuid were designed by award-winning architects who have caused a worldwide furore with their innovative and visually powerful designs.
The experience and inspiration that the architects put into their work translates into buildings with an international dimension and exceptional living quality. These masters of the trade harness the art of living and use of materials like no other and know how to effortlessly create smart designs that play with light, views and space.
Nieuw Zuid was built with an eye to the future. The master plan underlying the district envisions numerous innovative interventions that will make the neighbourhood climate-proof, green and sustainable.
One of the most eye-catching measures is the heat network, whose artistic chimney became an iconic eye-catcher. Wadis, drainage from green roofs, recovery of yard water and plantings on the buildings, relieve the burden on the sewer system and gradually direct rainwater back into the soil. Evaporation also provides cooling on hot days.
And there are numerous large and small things like this. Soil from the excavations was recovered to raise the quays, beehives lure the endangered creatures back to the city, low-traffic residential areas make the neighbourhood livable. Velo stations, additional bicycle storage, and good connections to public transport encourage alternative travel.
Nieuw Zuid lives. The neighbourhood is thriving and growing every day with new buildings, new faces, new businesses. Anyone walking through the neighbourhood will immediately see and feel that things are moving here. There are lunch spots, cafes, restaurants, bakeries, shops, a supermarket, doctors and a circular experience center.
One renowned art gallery after another has settled here and those who want to exercise can do so in the gym, the new sports hall or while jogging through the site. A nursery, school, student apartments and assisted living facilities provide for all generations.
A book market takes place here once a month, and there are fun initiatives for and by residents at regular intervals. There is a lot to do here. Would you like to stay up to date on the ins and outs of Nieuw Zuid? Then be sure to keep an eye on the blog.
